UISD keeps its 100K administrators but cuts Pre-K to half-a-day

How much did this Logo cost you UISD board?

It is obvious that the UISD board of trustees have lost sight of why their district exists. According to Pro8news, the board unanimously voted to cut the district's pre-k programs from full day to half-day. In doing so, the board has confirmed what many of us have known all along. Board president Pat Campos and the rest of the members consider protecting the jobs of the many UISD administrators who rake in over $100,000 a year as their number one priority.  Tonight's vote to slash the pre-k program in half is shameless proof of that philosophy.

After the vote, one of Superintendent Bobby Santos' lieutenants (some lady)  who also makes over $100K a year had the audacity to try to justify the pre-k cutbacks. Smiling for the camera, she gave her spin of why cutting the kids' program, and not her job, was the perfect solution.

The board also voted to go ahead with some boundary changes that had been proposed previously. An upset parent commented to the Pro8news reporter that the reason his kids could not attend the school of their choice was because  UISD and LISD teachers are given preference in allowing their kids to enroll at the schools where these teachers happen to teach-even if they reside elsewhere.

  1. They can simply justify their decision by noting that half a day of PreK schooling will still be offered. To them, they're not cutting the program entirely, they're just tweaking it a bit.

Parents who have to depend on the full-day of PreK will probably go apply at Head Start or enroll their children in a daycare facility. Trustess may be hoping parents do just that.

I really would like to see a shared sacrifice from everybody at both school districts. If personnel is going to be let go, and PreK is going to be adjusted, then I want to see football games forfeited and band trips cancelled.

  3. I just wonder how many kids are going to UISD because their parents work at UISD but they should be going to LISD because that is where they live. All it takes is a few hundred to zap resources from other students whose parents pay taxes in UISD. And how much does LISD lose because of the loss of students? Or do both districts do it and it evens out?

  4. I think both districts do it, but that does not make it right. Teachers are probably in a better situation to deal with the added cost of transporting their kids to the appropriate school than are most other parents.

I agree with KR about cancelling football games and band trips. Think about it, the amount of money spent on football for the benefit of only a relatively small number of students. This is definitely worth looking at further. The UISD board is enabling administration to continue to make cuts to are very lopsided as far as whom they affect.

  5. Hey, as long as the overlords are fine, what's the harm, right?
