Republicans want $5B in cuts to Texas education budget

"Ok, here's the deal! The FIRST thing I want cut is education. You got me?
Today in Austin, the proposed cuts to the state budget everyone's been expecting started to come into focus and the view is not pretty. Republicans again reiterated their position of no new taxes,  and no dipping in the rainy day fund. With the only remaining option being cuts, education was immediately targeted. These proposed cuts, totaling 5 billion dollars will have the following effects:

4 communities colleges to be closed

$772 M to be slashed for colleges & universities

100,000  kids to loose their pre-k programs

Financial aid for college freshmen to be eliminated

70,000 scholarships will be eliminated

No new science labs

Arts education slashed

No teacher incentive programs
One democrat representative commented that "if education is the driver of Texas' economic future, these cuts will send us into reverse". Like Obama said, you shouldn't give the keys to the republicans in the first place. But this is Texas and the republicans have been in the driver's seat for a long time now.

  1. Just goes to show that this governor is only interested in serving the wealthy. And why the hell should the rainy day fund NOT BE TOUCHED? Is it so he can keep funding his tech startup companies? --Anymouse

  2. That's the idea. He fund those companies, they make big bucks and contribute to his campaign.
